X is Alphabet’s moonshot factory. We are a diverse group of inventors and entrepreneurs who build and launch technologies that aim to improve the lives of millions, even billions, of people. Our goal: 10x impact on the world’s most intractable problems, not just 10% improvement. We approach projects that have the aspiration and riskiness of research with the speed and ambition of a startup.
The Team
Born from X, the moonshot factory, and working alongside teams at Google, we’re building a new type of robot. One that can learn by itself, to help anyone with (almost) anything. With one foot in today, and the other in tomorrow, we seek to turn the helper robots of science fiction novels into reality. Doing this requires taking on the hardest problems in robotics. All so we can work towards a future where helper robots are a part of a better everyday, for everyone.
We know that no company, no moonshot, no wild idea is greater than the efforts of the people behind it. Our team is thoughtful, driven and deliberately diverse, working together in a creative and collaborative environment, where everyone’s perspectives and expertise is valued.
We’re looking for a Sensing Lead. Find out more about us, and meet the people behind the robots on our website.

As Sensing Lead, you will be the tech lead and manager of a team of engineers responsible for defining the roadmap of our sensing systems. You will implement this roadmap through internal development as well as integrating relevant work from other Alphabet initiatives. The role comes with some open headcount to build the team as needed based on the high level strategy.
Your Impact
- Gather and analyze requirements across several teams including product, perception, navigation, machine learning and design, to name a few
- Develop and implement a sensing roadmap
- Own the delivery of our next generation sensing solutions for our robots with a focus on system integration and performance
- Provide technical leadership and career support to the sensing team
Skills you should have
- Experience with system design; ability to navigate sophisticated technical tradeoffs
- Ability to work with component & module vendors and contract manufacturers to implement camera systems; including specification to vendors, contract negotiations, definition of acceptance criteria and factory test requirements and on-site validation
- Hands-on characterization, bring-up, and debug work of camera systems
- Successful experience leading and handling a cross-functional team and delivered solutions in ambiguous environments
What we hope you have
- Extensive experience in camera system development
- Experience in shipping product
- Familiarity with other common robotic sensors such as LIDAR, radar, TOF, ultrasonic, etc.
- Experience with safety sensing and compliance
