Mountain View, CA (HQ)

Role:

X is looking for an experienced Creative Lead for its central Design team, our in-house design and user research studio serving all of X’s moonshots. The ideal candidate should have a strong interaction design and UX portfolio, with a demonstrable focus on the generation of rapid, exploratory prototypes. Current X projects may include early-stage robotics, aviation platforms, or a range of still-secret innovations.

Design at X requires significant creativity and flexibility from designers. This role will report to the Head of Design and depending on the project, you may also be involved in projects with a focus on user research, industrial design or business innovation.

Your day may involve designing interfaces, mapping out user journeys, creating visual assets, brainstorming in a large group, managing other designers or prototyping future interactions. In parallel, this role will involve working closely with business strategists, scientists and entrepreneurial engineers, and the introduction of strong design principles and processes to these partners. You will have a strong interest in technology, have worked alongside engineers and product managers, and have an aptitude for all aspects of design.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage early-stage projects, which may be independent exercises, but may include other visual and interaction designers, research, prototyping, general product vision, and industrial designers.
  • Manage and prioritise more than one project at once, which change on a regular basis
  • Work closely with engineers, scientists and business strategists to develop coherent visions and future scenarios, and articulate the journey to get there.
  • Quickly get up to speed on wide range of breakthrough technologies—grasping inherent capabilities, limitations, and opportunities
  • Identify ways and phases where design can have greatest impact; work with team leads and team program manager to scope, prioritize, and plan efforts accordingly
  • Foster user-centric design and research culture, values, and principles within the group and across X
  • Advocate for our users, operators, and bystanders

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in Design (e.g. interaction, product, industrial), HCI, CS, or a related field.
  • 8+years of professional experience in Design or a related field
  • Fluency in roles, methods, processes, and best practices for user-centered design and research
  • Effectiveness in working across organizational boundaries and/or with external partners to define, manage, and prioritize work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ability to manage ambiguity, work autonomously, and multi-task in an agile environment
  • The ability to balance practical short-term needs of project teams with ideal design processes
  • Experience working with or in start-ups or early phase projects
  • A strong portfolio or work samples showcasing product design/strategy prowess
  • Excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills; the ability to communicate complex design concepts clearly and persuasively across different audiences and varying levels of the organization (especially technical stakeholders

If you already work for us, your answer will not be used against you in any way. Because a person may become disabled at any time, we are required to ask all of our employees to update their information every five years. You may voluntarily self-identify as having a disability on this form without fear of any punishment because you did not identify as having a disability earlier.
